Mike Maczuga Biography

Micheal Maczuga has been named "2007 Artist to Watch" in Southwest Art magazine.

Michael Maczuga considers himself a native Arizonan. Although born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1957, he and his family moved here in 1964. He regards this move as the time he first became interested in art.

Michael remembers owning a card game called "Author" as a small boy. He has no memory of ever playing the game, but a distinct recollection of always sketching the authors' faces from the fronts of the cards. Michael was strongly encouraged about his art throughout high school by teachers, friends and family. After graduation in 1975, he attended Arizona State University with the intention of obtaining a degree in art. Ultimately, Michael’s direction changed and he started his own swim club, The Arizona Marlins, where he coaches and trains competitive swimmers.

In 2000, Michael’s interest in fine art was renewed following a decision to take some classes at the Scottsdale Artist School. His instructors were, and are, among the finest in this country including but not limited to: Ray Roberts, Mike Malm, John Burton, Bob Lemler, and Gabor Svagrik. Michael credits Scottsdale Artist School for providing him the inspiration and technical skills to pursue his professional fine arts career.

Michael paints daily wherever and whenever time allows. He became a member of the Oil Painters of America in 2004. He is also the founding director of the one and only major plein aire painters show in Scottsdale, “The Wild Wild West Show,” an invitational and juried show. The plein aire show is extremely important to Michael because it allowed him to incorporate a mentorship initiative for local high school art students. When asked about the mentorship initiative Michael said, "Nobody ever told me what I needed to do to become successful as an artist. It would have helped to know what to expect. I want to help kids have a real chance at this dream career."

Michael’s artwork can be found at Scottsdale Fine Art Gallery, Scottsdale, Arizona and in private collections throughout the southwest.
