"Everything I do is directly from nature, but I re-orchestrate.”
Peter Fiore's landscape paintings focus on the everyday beauty that most take for granted. Whether it is a sliver of sunlight across a winter field, or the solitude of a lone boat at the end of the season, Fiore says "I'm interested in making the simple profound". His favorite subject matter is the winter landscape, "a time when the earth looses its leafy covering and reveals it's true self. Covered in snow, the world reflects light and creates a spectrum of colors that are both dramatic and beautiful". His true subject is light and how it defines and endlessly changes the landscape around us.
Fiore has been painting and exhibiting his work for almost 30 years. He studied at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League. He has illustrated thousands of projects and collaborated on more than 20 children's books. He has received over 75 distinguished awards including a silver medal from the Society of Illustrators where he was president from 1993 to 1995. He is included in The Illustrator in America, 1860-2000 by Walt Reed where he was featured for his contribution in excellence to American illustration. He’s been on the faculty at Pratt Institute, Syracuse University and presently teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He has given numerous guest lectures and workshops on painting. Fiore's landscape paintings are widely collected. While he draws his inspiration from many places, he lives and works along the Delaware River in Pennsylvania.
Artist's Statement
”It is the play of light and shadow that allows us to perceive an object's shape and size. But for me, light is more than a visual tool, it is an emotional subject. It is through the manipulation of light - how it falls, changes, sculpts, colors and creates various moods on a subject - that intrigues and inspires me.”
